Our take
The Big Berkey is the most common Berkey size for household use. Stainless-steel upper and lower chambers, 2.25-gallon lower-chamber capacity, and two Black Berkey filter elements per the manufacturer's spec. Berkey's commissioned independent lab reports cover PFAS, lead, mercury, and pharmaceutical residues. As with the Travel system, the citation tier is "manufacturer-commissioned independent testing" rather than NSF/ANSI P473 certification — readers tracking certification specifically should weigh that distinction. Gravity throughput is slow per the gravity-filter category in general, with the larger reservoir buffering against the slow flow.
Documented strengths
- No electricity, no plumbing
- Long filter element life (~6,000 gal per pair)
- Larger reservoir than Travel system
Documented trade-offs
- Self-published testing rather than NSF P473
- Counter footprint is real
- Slow filtration speed
