Our take

The Big Berkey is the most common Berkey size for households. Stainless-steel upper and lower chambers, 2.25-gallon lower capacity, two Black Berkey filter elements. The published lab reports cover PFAS, lead, mercury, and pharmaceutical residues. Like the smaller Travel system, Berkey self-publishes test data rather than holding NSF P473 certification — that is a meaningful editorial caveat. Throughput is slow (gravity), but capacity buffers it.

Pros

  • No electricity, no plumbing
  • Long filter element life (~6,000 gal per pair)
  • Larger reservoir than Travel system

Cons

  • Self-published testing rather than NSF P473
  • Counter footprint is real
  • Slow filtration speed
