Our take
Smithey is small-batch heritage cast iron made in Charleston, SC. The No. 12 (12-inch, ~7-8 lb per the brand) ships pre-seasoned with grapeseed oil and uses a hand-polished smooth interior — the smoother surface is associated in the cast-iron literature with faster patina development than rough-finish cast iron. Same iron physics as Lodge per material composition, with the same heat retention, induction compatibility, and absence of synthetic coatings. The price difference vs Lodge reflects American small-foundry manufacturing and the polished finish, not a different material category.
